Disney On Ice presents Rockin’ Ever After

Just the title of the new Disney On Ice show has me counting down to show time! In a new twist on fairytale fun, favorite Disney characters compete to be the next superstar in comical segments leading up to the tales of show stopping princesses – Ariel, Rapunzel, Belle, and Merida from Disney•Pixar’s BRAVE in her ice debut!

Mickey and Minnie encounter the most talented performers in the land with an all-star lineup that includes Sebastian and the Daughters of Triton from The Little Mermaid, the rowdy pub thugs from Tangled and the spunky enchanted servants from Beauty and the Beast. The journey continues to the Scottish highlands where audiences will be captivated and star struck by Merida, as an exhilarating archery contest ensues for the right to marry the fiery redhead.

Good news! I’m giving away a family four-pack to the show!

Fully Charged

My life is a circus at the moment so it was only fitting we take a family outing to see Ringling Bros.® (aka The Greatest Show On Earth) perform their newest show, Fully Charged.

Like last year, we “pre-circused” with pizza at Metro Esspresso downtown and headed over to the new Amway Center. Highlights of the show for Mia were the Ukranian strongmen who twirled telephone poles over their heads, The Fernandez Brothers who jumped and flipped atop of huge steel turbines and of course the amazing Ringling Bros.® elephants. Highlights of the show for baby Charli were the bright and colorful lights. (Hey, babies can have opinions to you know.)

The show is going on in Orlando through this weekend, with the final show on Monday evening. If you miss the show in Orlando, head to Jacksonville Thursday, January 20 through Sunday, January 23.

Lower level tickets at the Amway Arena start at $25. All seats are reserved, and tickets are available at www.ringling.com orwww.ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.

An Awakening It Was

I gave away two tickets to Spring Awakening last week and was lucky enough to make it to opening night of the show myself. I had to see what all the hype was truly about. Let me tell you, the hype was well deserved.

Cast of Spring Awakening

The music, all written by Duncan Sheik, was the highlight for me. The cast was so full of passion and the coming of age message was delivered in ways that hit home.

As a parent, the show reminded me that what’s best for you and your life isn’t always the path for your children. The “rules” that we are all expected to follow in this life often hold us back from our true passions and self. Parents are many times consumed with how others are viewing them instead of focusing on what’s truly best for their child. We need to foster the passions of our children instead of looking down upon them and shaming them because they don’t fit the mold of society.

Taylor Trensch as Moritz

Spring Awakening is in Orlando through Sunday, May 23 so grab tickets and get to the Bob Carr. Click here for a list of tour dates in other cities across the U.S.

I wouldn’t recommend this show for kids under the age of 14 or 15 due to brief nudity and adult content.

Being Green Was Never So Much Fun!

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away… Really, it never gets old. I attended my first Sesame Street Live show at the ripe old age of one, and have been a fan ever since. There was a brief period of time where I thought I was too good etc., ect. But now, Sesame Street is part of my life once again and I’m glad.

Last evening Mia and I attended the opening performance of Sesame Street Live’s Elmo’s Green Thumb at the UCF Arena. (The show’s in town through Sunday, October 11.) Elmo’s Green Thumb brought the same energy and fun that family’s can always expect from Sesame Street Live. The colorful set, special effects, dance and song numbers made for a truly excellent performance.

In the show, Elmo and his friends look for the perfect spot to plant Elmo’s sunflower, Sunny. Abby Cadabby tries to set a spell to help Sunnygrow, but in turn shrinks the friends. Being so small allows Elmo and his friends to see the garden from a bugs eye perspective, literally. They have a picnic with ladybugs, dance with the beetles and talk face to face with a bee. The accidental shrinking spell allows them to understand why it is so important to respect the earth and nature around us. In the midst of the fun, there’s always a lesson to be learned on Sesame Street!

The set for the show is bright and the effects are the coolest. The music is, as always, amazing with a mix of well-known tunes like “Lady Bug Picnic” and “I Love Trash” and  renditions of songs like “New Attitude” and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” Only the characters from Sesame Street can get away remixing old songs with new words so parents can get in the groove with their kids!

Sorry for the grainy cell phone photo of Mia. Left my camera in the car and had to depend on the cell. Compliments of my technologically advanced mother, a photo of the two of us at my first Sesame Street Live show. Yep that’s me, and as Mia said, “I have a flag.”

So, tear, tear… The show brought back many memories and gave me the opportunity to make a new one with Mia. I’m sure this isn’t news to  anyone. I guess it’s what Sesame Street has been doing for years.
The show is at the UCF Arena through Sunday, October 11, so get your tickets! If you’re not in Central Florida, find out when Elmo’s Green Thumb is coming to a city near you. You don’t want to miss this one.

PS~ Telly Monster deserves some major recognition for those toe touches!

When Classics Come To Life On Stage

Just the other night Mia and I were curled in bed watching as Fern strolled Wilbur through the countryside singing the ever-enchanting “There Must Be Something More.” Mia and I hummed along trying to hit the high notes. Cuddled together, I think we both sort of knew the feeling Fern was experiencing for Wilbur and vice versa. (Sorry for the mush, but this movie really turns on my emotions.)

Sharing classic movies with your child is great, but nothing compares to watching your favorite characters come to life on stage. The Orlando Repertory Theatre performs countless classics throughout the year along with a variety of other shows. Lucky for Mia and I, they will be performing Charlotte’s Web September 12 – October 11. Hooray!

Even better news… My friends at the Repertory Theatre would like to give one Mamma Mia reader tickets to experience the magic of Charlotte’s Web on the date and time of their choice! (Excluding Sept. 26)

Click here to enter the giveaway! Be sure to include your contact information in the email. The winner will be notified next Wednesday, September 2. (show times are Saturdays at 11am and 4pm and Sundays at 2 and 5pm)

Wait theres more! (In true Mamma Mia fashion)

As an added bonus, the theatre is hosting an Opening Day Bash! The event will take place after the 11 am and 4 pm performances on Saturday, September 12. Take the family to the “county fair” in honor of Charlotte’s Web, and enjoy face painting, cotton candy, bounce houses, arts, crafts and other activities. You will receive your Bash voucher when you pick up your tickets for either of the opening day performances.

We are fortunate here in Orlando to have the Orlando Repertory Theatre who has a mission to inspire new connections between children, adults, parents and educators through the shared experience of art and literature as theatre.

Not in Orlando and looking to expose your kids to the amazing world of theatre? There are tons of theatre groups and facilities around the globe. I’d be willing to bet there’s one or two in your town! Look for resources at your local library, community theatre or Chamber of Commerce.
