Hello Mango. Nice To Eat You.

I’ll be learning a lot in my new role as marketing manager with Produce For Kids. The great part is, I’ll be able to pass along my new found knowledge to Mamma Mia readers.

We’ve been in a fruit rut in our house lately so when I was introduced to the fine folks at the National Mango Board last weekend, I had many questions on how to incorporate this exciting new fruit into our world.

First off… Watch this quick video to understand how to properly cut a mango.

Next, here are some of the super easy ways to incorporate mangos into your everyday meals.

As a Snack…

Mango Kabobs: Put a mango cube or two on a toothpick, dip in yogurt and enjoy!
Mango Icepops: Puree fresh cut mango in a blender or food processor. Pour into ice cube trays, stick in a popsicle stick or toothpick and freeze. Voila! Mango icepops.

Mango Roll Ups

More Ideas…

Mango Breakfast Smoothie: Make a yummy smoothie by mixing mango with low-fat yogurt and ice cubes in a blender.
Mango Roll Ups: Slice mango into thin strips and roll up with a slice of deli meat, such as ham or turkey.

For mango recipe ideas visit the Mango Board’s super cool website. They even have a section especially for kids – ManGoKids

Celebrate Reading! Max Spaniel Giveaway!

As you know, we love reading and playing chef in the Mamma Mia house. Mia has already learned to read and spell basic words. The cooking… well, we’ll work on that.  For these reasons, I jumped on the chance to partner with Scholastic to support the launch of David Catrow’s new book, Max Spaniel: Funny Lunch.

You might be familiar with some of David Catrow’s other books such as Max Spaniel: Dinosaur Lunch or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Share. In Funny Lunch, Max, the loveable spaniel is back and serving up one hysterical meal after another at his very own diner.

To celebrate the launch of the book, we are giving away one prize pack including Max Spaniel: Funny Lunch and a Playful Chef Kids Cooking Kit. The kit includes all types of kid size cooking utensils including a whisk, pastry brush, mixing bowl, timer, apron measuring spoons and cups, baking pan, recipe cards and more! (info on how to enter below)

Playful Chef Cooking Kit

The giveaway fun doesn’t stop there. Even if you don’t win the “grand prize” with the cooking kit, we have two other Max Spaniel: Funny Lunch books to give away.

Three chances to win!

How to win: Leave a comment on the importance of reading with your child.

For bonus entry: Tweet this comment and leave a comment letting us know you did so.

This contest will run through May 24, 2010 and  is  open to U.S. citizens. Winners will be contacted directly.

More on the author: David Catrow is a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist and the award-wining illustrator of numerous books for children, including Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Songs by Alan Katz. He lives in Springfield, Ohio, with his wife, and their three dogs, Bubbs, Beetle, and Blue. Max Spaniel is based upon Bubbs!

Go Ahead… Play With Your Food

Well what do ya know… It’s Foto Friday again. I’ve fallen slightly behind but the reason is good. Big news for The Mamma Mia Blog coming soon!

I don’t have much talent in the kitchen, but over the past four years, Mia has inspired me to do better. I’ve actually found that cooking is kind of fun. Yes, I said it! Anyway, I’ve had some great times cooking and baking together with Mia. Well, I call it cooking and baking and she calls it playing with food.  Don’t get me wrong, we’ve made cookies solid as a bricks and a cake that had no center, but hey… we’ve had fun.

Here’s a super easy, and emotionally stimulating, recipe to try with your kids.
